                Mark 1:4-11New Revised Standard Version

4 John the baptizer appeared[External link opens in new tab or windowa] in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with[External link opens in new tab or windowb] water; but he will baptize you with[External link opens in new tab or windowc] the Holy Spirit.”

                The Baptism of Jesus

9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved;[External link opens in new tab or windowd] with you I am well pleased.”

Shall we gather at the river
Where bright angel feet have trod

Flowing by the throne of God

                Chorus

                Verse 2
On the margin of the river
                Washing up its silver spray

                All the happy golden day

                Verse 3

And provide a robe and crown

                Verse 4
At the smiling of the river

Lift their songs of saving grace

                Verse 5
Soon we'll reach the shining river

                Verse 1
On Jordan's stormy banks I stand

                Where my possessions lie

                Verse 2

                Nor pois'nous breath
                Can reach that healthful shore
                Sickness and sorrow
                Pain and death

                Matthew 2:1-12New Revised Standard Version

The Visit of the Wise Men

2 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men[External link opens in new tab or windowa] from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising,[External link opens in new tab or windowb] and have come to pay him homage.” 3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah[External link opens in new tab or windowc] was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:

6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
                    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who is to shepherd[External link opens in new tab or windowd] my people Israel.’”

7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men[External link opens in new tab or windowe] and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” 9 When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising,[External link opens in new tab or windowf] until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped,[External link opens in new tab or windowg] they were overwhelmed with joy. 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

                Verse 1
                While shepherds kept their watching
                O'er silent flocks by night

                There shone a holy light

                Verse 2
                The shepherds feared and trembled
                When lo above the earth

                That hailed the Savior's birth

                Verse 3
                Down in a lowly manger

Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay

                Chorus
                Noel Noel Noel Noel
Born is the King of Israel

                Verse 2
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night

                Verse 3
And by the light of that same star
Three wise men came from country far
To seek for a king was their intent
And to follow the star wherever it went

                Verse 4
This star drew nigh to the northwest
O'er Bethlehem it took its rest

Right over the place where Jesus lay

                New Revised Standard Version

Jesus Is Presented in the Temple

22 When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), 24 and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon;[External link opens in new tab or windowa] this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.[External link opens in new tab or windowb] 27 Guided by the Spirit, Simeon[External link opens in new tab or windowc] came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon[External link opens in new tab or windowd] took him in his arms and praised God, saying,

29 “Master, now you are dismissing your servant[External link opens in new tab or windowe] in peace,
                    according to your word;
30 for my eyes have seen your salvation,
31     which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel.”

33 And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon[External link opens in new tab or windowf] blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

36 There was also a prophet, Anna[External link opens in new tab or windowg] the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child[External link opens in new tab or windowh] to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

                The Return to Nazareth

39 When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

                The Christ Candle                December 24

We light the white candle at the center of the wreath on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve.

The white tends to symbolize Christ’s purity, showing Christ’s blamelessness. We do have to keep in mind, churches can vary on candle colors, and not everyone chooses to light a white candle for Christ.

Not surprisingly, the Christ candle represents Christ and the role he plays in the Christmas story. Jesus brought light into the world through his arrival on earth as a baby.

Luke 2: 1-20New Revised Standard Version

                The Birth of Jesus

2 In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 All went to their own towns to be registered. 4 Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5 He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

                The Shepherds and the Angels

8 In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah,[External link opens in new tab or windowa] the Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host,[External link opens in new tab or windowb] praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”[External link opens in new tab or windowc]

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17 When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

The Candle of Love              December 20

Some church traditions vary on which candle goes on which Sunday. Some may light the “love candle” on the second Sunday of Advent instead of the fourth. Others have lit the candle of Peace on the fourth week of Advent instead of the candle of love.

Some churches will light a candle of faith on the second Sunday instead of a candle of peace.

No matter what the church tradition, we can assuredly know that virtues such as love, hope, peace, joy, and faith are important in the Christmas story as well as in our daily walk with Christ. Whichever we celebrate on whatever Sunday of Advent, we know all of them are important hallmarks of the Christian faith and journey.

The symbolism of the love candle. Otherwise known as the Angel candle, this candle can represent purity.

We see the other candles representing a part of the Christmas story in addition to virtues.

                Mary’s Song of Praise

46 And Mary[External link opens in new tab or windowa] said,

                “My soul magnifies the Lord,
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
                    Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
                    and holy is his name.
50 His mercy is for those who fear him
                    from generation to generation.
                51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
                    and lifted up the lowly;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
                    in remembrance of his mercy,
55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors,

The Candle of Joy                 December 13

Otherwise known as the Shepherd Candle, this candle reflects the joy that comes through Jesus’ arrival, and through the salvation he has gifted us.

Christians may wonder why the church decided to make this particular candle a different color than the others.

Although Christians have presented several reasons for the pinkish nature of the candle, from a tradition where priests would wear pink vestments to parents eagerly awaiting the joy of a child’s arrival by painting the room pink, the rosy candle has its roots in something known as External link opens in new tab or windowGaudete Sunday.

During this third week of advent, this Sunday celebrates the passage External link opens in new tab or windowPhilippians 4:4-5, its verses extolling readers to “rejoice” for “indeed the Lord is near.”

In other words, this week celebrates the joy of Christ’s coming to earth.

We should also note that not every church uses a pink candle to represent this day. Some will use a violet one, just like all the others. Violet tends to have a somber nature, and it also reflects royalty, acknowledging Jesus’ kingship.

No matter what color of candle a church displays on that third Sunday, churches want to highlight the importance of joy in advent season. During a time where depression is at an all-time high and people seem to be in the most despair, this candle offers a bright light during a dark time.

It is also known as the Shepherd Candle to highlight the joy the shepherds experienced when they received the good news about Christ’s birth (External link opens in new tab or windowLuke 2:8-20). During the middle of the night, the darkest time, the shepherds encountered angels.

                Isaiah 61:1-4New Revised Standard Version

                The Good News of Deliverance

61 The spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
                    because the Lord has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,
                    to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
                    and release to the prisoners;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,
                    and the day of vengeance of our God;
                    to comfort all who mourn;
3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion—
to give them a garland instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.
4 They shall build up the ancient ruins,
                    they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,
                    the devastations of many generations.

                Isaiah 61:8-11New Revised Standard Version

8 For I the Lord love justice,
I hate robbery and wrongdoing;[External link opens in new tab or windowa]
I will faithfully give them their recompense,
and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
9 Their descendants shall be known among the nations,
                    and their offspring among the peoples;
all who see them shall acknowledge
that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed.
10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
                    my whole being shall exult in my God;
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation,
he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the earth brings forth its shoots,
and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up,
so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
to spring up before all the nations.

                Verse 1
It came upon the midnight clear
                That glorious song of old
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold

Peace on the earth good will to men
                From heaven's all gracious King

                To hear the angels sing

                Verse 2
Still through the cloven skies they come

The Candle of Peace             December 6

One of the hallmarks of the Christmas story is when the angels appear to the shepherds and proclaim, “Peace on earth,” in External link opens in new tab or windowLuke 2:14.

Jesus brought about peace, in the most unexpected ways, when he arrived. The Jews, particularly the zealots, wanted a rebellion. They wanted their Savior to overturn the oppressive rule of the Romans and bring about peace in a violent way.

But Jesus had something else in mind.  Jesus brings us peace in a number of ways.

First, he gives us inner peace. Because of his work on the cross, we have a chance to receive salvation and be indwelled by the Holy Spirit. This grants us an inner peace (External link opens in new tab or windowJohn 14:27). Not only do we have the peace that comes from our assurance of salvation, but we also have the peace of mind knowing God will heal this broken world and will come again.

Second, we have peace with others. We put aside our differences (External link opens in new tab or windowGalatians 3:28), especially with other believers, because we belong to the same family. We have the same purpose: to let others know about the peace of Christ.

The Hebrew word for peace: Shalom, goes far beyond not fighting with others or peace as we know it. As pointed out in the book External link opens in new tab or windowNot the Way It’s Supposed to Be, shalom is, in essence, how things are meant to be: a slice of heaven.

The peace of God allows us to look at others through heaven’s eyes and help guide the world to see God’s here and not-yet here kingdom.

Peace from God, biblical peace, allows us to External link opens in new tab or windowtrust in God’s promises (External link opens in new tab or windowProverbs 3:5), through restful, tranquil faith, despite the dark, scary world around us.

2 Peter 3:8-15New Revised Standard Version

8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you,[External link opens in new tab or windowa] not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.[External link opens in new tab or windowb]

11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening[External link opens in new tab or windowc] the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? 13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

                Final Exhortation and Doxology

14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,

                Verse 1
Let all mortal flesh keep silence
And with fear and trembling stand
                Ponder nothing worldly minded
For with blessing in His hand
                Christ our God
                To earth descendeth
                Our full homage to demand

                Verse 2
King of kings yet born of Mary
As of old on earth He stood
Lord of lords in human vesture
In the body and the blood
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heav'nly food

                Verse 3
At His feet the six winged seraph
                Cherubim with sleepless eye
Veil their faces to the Presence
As with ceaseless voice they cry
                Alleluia alleluia alleluia
                Lord Most High

                Verse 4
Rank on rank the host of heaven
Spreads its vanguard on the way
As the Light of light descendeth
From the realms of endless day
That the pow'rs of hell may vanish

                In perfect harmony

Let this be my solemn vow
                To take each moment

The Candle of Hope              November 29

Like the prophets in the External link opens in new tab or windowOld Testament, we hope for a Messiah to save us from the sin in the world (External link opens in new tab or windowIsaiah 9:6-7). We anticipate our Savior’s arrival.

Also known as the “External link opens in new tab or windowprophecy candle,” this candle assures us we can have hope that God will fulfill the prophecies declared in the Old Testament about Jesus. Hope doesn’t disappoint us (External link opens in new tab or windowRomans 5:5).

In this day and age, where evil abounds and all seems lost, we can also hope that the prophecies about Jesus’ second arrival to earth will also be fulfilled.

The somber purple color on the candle represents repentance and fasting as we anticipate the Lord’s coming. Purple doubles as a color for royalty throughout the External link opens in new tab or windowBible, symbolizing God’s kingship and reign.

                Isaiah 64:1-9New Revised Standard Version

64 O that you would tear open the heavens and come down,
so that the mountains would quake at your presence—
2 [External link opens in new tab or windowa] as when fire kindles brushwood
and the fire causes water to boil—
to make your name known to your adversaries,
so that the nations might tremble at your presence!
3 When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect,
you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.
4 From ages past no one has heard,
                    no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
who works for those who wait for him.
5 You meet those who gladly do right,
those who remember you in your ways.
                But you were angry, and we sinned;
because you hid yourself we transgressed.[External link opens in new tab or windowb]
6 We have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth.
We all fade like a leaf,
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
7 There is no one who calls on your name,
                    or attempts to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
and have delivered[External link opens in new tab or windowc] us into the hand of our iniquity.
                8 Yet, O Lord, you are our Father;
                    we are the clay, and you are our potter;
we are all the work of your hand.
9 Do not be exceedingly angry, O Lord,
and do not remember iniquity forever.
Now consider, we are all your people.

                New Revised Standard Version

                The Judgment of the Nations

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40 And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family,[External link opens in new tab or windowa] you did it to me.’ 41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

                God’s Eternity and Human Frailty

A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place[External link opens in new tab or windowa]
                    in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth,
or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

3 You turn us[External link opens in new tab or windowb] back to dust,
and say, “Turn back, you mortals.”
4 For a thousand years in your sight
are like yesterday when it is past,
or like a watch in the night.

5 You sweep them away; they are like a dream,
                    like grass that is renewed in the morning;
                6 in the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
in the evening it fades and withers.

                7 For we are consumed by your anger;
by your wrath we are overwhelmed.
8 You have set our iniquities before you,
our secret sins in the light of your countenance.

                9 For all our days pass away under your wrath;
our years come to an end[External link opens in new tab or windowc] like a sigh.
10 The days of our life are seventy years,
                    or perhaps eighty, if we are strong;
                even then their span[External link opens in new tab or windowd] is only toil and trouble;
they are soon gone, and we fly away.

11 Who considers the power of your anger?
Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you.
12 So teach us to count our days
that we may gain a wise heart.

                This Is My Father's World

                Verse 1
                This is my Father's world
                And to my list'ning ears
All nature sings and 'round me rings
                Music of the spheres

                Chorus 1
                This is my Father's world
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees of skies and seas
                His hand the wonders wrought

                Verse 2
                This is my Father's world
                The birds their carols raise
The morning light the lily white
                Declare their Maker's praise

                Chorus 2
                This is my Father's world
He shines in all that's fair
In the rust'ling grass I hear Him pass
                He speaks to me ev'rywhere

                Verse 3
                This is my Father's world
                O let me ne'er forget
And though the wrong seems oft so strong
                God is the Ruler yet
And though the wrong seems oft so strong
                God is the Ruler yet

                Chorus 3
                This is my Father's world
Why should my heart be sad
The Lord is King let the heavens ring
God reigns let the earth be glad
The Lord is King let the heavens ring
God reigns let the earth be glad

                Bridge
The Lord is King let the heavens ring
The Lord is King let the heavens ring (3X)
                God reigns
                God reigns
                God reigns
                God reigns

                The Steadfast Love

                Chorus
                The steadfast love
                Of the Lord never ceases
His mercies never come to an end
                They are new every morning
                New every morning
Great is Thy faithfulness O Lord
                Great is Thy faithfulness

                Verse 1
                The Lord is my portion
                Says my soul
Therefore I will hope in Him

                Verse 2
                The Lord is good
To those who wait for Him
To the soul that seeks Him
It is good that we should wait quietly
For the salvation of the Lord

                Verse 3
The Lord will not cast off forever
                But will have compassion
For He does not willingly afflict
Or grieve the sons of men

                Verse 4
So let us examine all our ways
                And return to the Lord
Let us lift up our hearts and hands
                To God in heav'n

                Abide With Me (Eventide)

                Verse 1
Abide with me fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens Lord with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless O abide with me

                Verse 2
Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day
Earth's joys grow dim its glories pass away
Change and decay in all around I see
O Thou who changest not abide with me

                Verse 3
I need Thy presence ev'ry passing hour
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's pow'r
Who like Thyself my Guide and Stay can be
Through cloud and sunshine O abide with me

                Verse 4
I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness
Where is death's sting where grave thy victory
I triumph still if Thou abide with me

                Verse 5
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
                Heav'n's morning breaks
                And earth's vain shadows flee
In life in death O Lord abide with me

                Joshua 24:1-3New Revised Standard Version

                The Tribes Renew the Covenant

                24 Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. 2 And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Long ago your ancestors—Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor—lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods. 3 Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac;

                Joshua 24:14-25New Revised Standard Version

14 “Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; 17 for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; 18 and the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”

19 But Joshua said to the people, “You cannot serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume you, after having done you good.” 21 And the people said to Joshua, “No, we will serve the Lord!” 22 Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” 23 He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.” 24 The people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and him we will obey.” 25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem.

Surely The Presence Of The Lord

                Chorus
                Surely the presence
Of the Lord is in this place
I can feel His mighty power
                And His grace
I can hear the brush of angel's wings
I see glory on each face
                Surely the presence
Of the Lord is in this place

                Verse 1
In the midst of His children
The Lord said He would be
                It doesn't take very many
It can be just two or three
And I feel that same sweet Spirit
That I've felt oft times before
                Oh surely I can say
I have been with the Lord

                Verse 2
There's a holy hush around us
As God's glory fills this place
I've touched the hem of His garment
And I can almost see His face
                And my heart is overflowing
With the fullness of His joy
                I know without a doubt
That I have been with the Lord

                Holy Ground

                Verse 1
                This is holy ground
                We're standing on holy ground
                For the Lord is present
And where He is is holy
                This is holy ground
                We're standing on holy ground
                For the Lord is present
And where He is is holy

                Verse 2
                These are holy hands
                He's given us holy hands
                He works through these hands
And so these hands are holy
                These are holy hands
                He's given us holy hands
                He works through these hands
And so these hands are holy

                Verse 3
                These are holy lips
                He's given us holy lips
                He speaks through these lips
And so these lips are holy
                These are holy lips
                He's given us holy lips
                He speaks through these lips
And so these lips are holy

                Holy Ground

                Verse 1
As I walked through the door
                I sensed His presence
And I knew this was the place
                Where love abounds
                For this is a temple
                Jehovah God abides here
We are standing in His presence
                On holy ground

                Chorus 1
We are standing on holy ground
                And I know that there
                Are angels all around
                Let us praise Jesus now
We are standing in His presence
                (On holy ground)

                Verse 2
                In His presence
                There is joy beyond measure
                And at His feet
Peace of mind can still be found
                If you have a need
I know He has the answer
Reach out and claim it child
                You're standing on holy ground

                Chorus 2
We are standing in His presence (2X)
                On holy ground

Near To The Heart Of God

                Chorus
                O Jesus blest Redeemer
Sent from the heart of God
Hold us who wait before Thee
Near to the heart of God

                Verse 1
There is a place of quiet rest
Near to the heart of God
A place where sin cannot molest
Near to the heart of God

                Verse 2
There is a place of comfort sweet
Near to the heart of God
A place where we our Savior meet
Near to the heart of God

                Verse 3
There is a place of full release
Near to the heart of God
A place where all is joy and peace
Near to the heart of God

                Verse 1
                For all the saints
                Who from their labours rest
                Who to the world

                Your name O Jesus
                Be forever blessed
                Alleluia alleluia

                Verse 2
                You were their Rock
                Their fortress and their might
                You Lord their Captain
                In the well-fought fight

                Alleluia alleluia

                Verse 3
                So may your soldiers
                Faithful true and bold
                Fight as the saints
                Who nobly fought of old
                And win with them
                The victor's crown of gold
                Alleluia alleluia

                Verse 4
                One holy people
                Fellowship divine
                We feebly struggle
                They in glory shine
                In earth and heaven
                The saints in praise combine
                Alleluia alleluia

                Verse 5
And when the fight is fierce
                The warfare long
                Far off we hear
                The distant triumph song
                And hearts are brave again
                And arms are strong
                Alleluia alleluia

                Verse 6
                The golden evening brightens
                In the west
                Soon soon to faithful warriors
                Comes their rest
                The peaceful calm
                Of paradise the blessed
                Alleluia alleluia

                Verse 7
                But look there breaks
                A yet more glorious day
                Saints all triumphant
                Rise in bright array
                The King of glory
                Passes on His way
                Alleluia alleluia

                Verse 8
                From earth's wide bounds
                From dawn to setting sun
                Through heaven's gates
                To God the three-in-one
                They come to sing
                The song on earth begun
                Alleluia alleluia

Shall We Gather At The River (Hanson Place)

                Verse 1
Shall we gather at the river
Where bright angel feet have trod
                With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God

                Chorus
Yes we'll gather at the river
                The beautiful the beautiful river
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God

                Verse 2
On the margin of the river
                Washing up its silver spray
We will talk and worship ever
                All the happy golden day

                Verse 3
Ere we reach the shining river
                Lay we ev’ry burden down
                Grace our spirits will deliver
And provide a robe and crown

                Verse 4
At the smiling of the river
                Mirror of the Savior's face
Saints whom death will never sever
Lift their songs of saving grace

                Verse 5
Soon we'll reach the shining river
                Soon our pilgrimage will cease
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
                With the melody of peace
